Dr. David Yeager Wins 2017 SRCD Early Career Research Contributions Award
Assistant Professor David Yeager has been awarded The Society for Research in Child Development's 2017 Early Career Research Contributions Award. Dr. Yeager will accept the award at the SRCD Awards Ceremony in Austin, on Friday, April 7, 2017. Established in 2002, the awards are made to a person or persons (ordinarily no more than six years beyond the Ph.D. or equivalent degree) who distinguish themselves as researchers and scholars, as evidenced through research, publications, and scholarly activity. Prof. Cristine Legare Awarded APA's 2016 Boyd McCandless Young Scientist Award
Dr. Cristine Legare was awarded the American Psychological Association's 2016 Boyd McCandless Young Scientist Awardin Developmental Psychology from Division 7. The Award recognizes a distinguished theoretical contribution to developmental psychology, programmatic research of distinction or a distinguished contribution to the dissemination of developmental science. Prof. Chris Beevers & Assoc. Prof. Alison Preston Elected APS Fellows
Professor Chris Beevers and Associate Professor Alison Preston have been elected to be Fellows of the Association for Psychological Science. APS Fellows are Association members who have made outstanding, sustained contributions to the science of psychology in research, application, teaching, and/or service. (6/27/2016)
Dr. David Crews Awarded APA's D.O. Hebb Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award
Ashbel Smith Professor David Crews will be awarded the 2016 Donald O. Hebb Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award from Division 6 (the Society for Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology) at the American Psychological Association annual convention in Denver this August. The award honors a psychologist who has made distinguished theoretical and/or empirical contributions to basic research in behavioral neuroscience and/or comparative psychology. (6/18/2016)
Dr. Jacqueline Evans Receives 2016 Arnold Buss Teaching Award
Dr. Jacqueline Evans was awarded the UT Psychology Department's Arnold H. Buss Teaching Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching for 2016. The Award, created in honor of Dr. Arnold Buss, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, was created in 2008 to be given annually to an outstanding lecturer who has demonstrated a high level of excellence in undergraduate teaching. Dr. James Pennebaker Awarded 2016 APA Award for Distinguished Scientific Applications of Psychology
Professor James Pennebaker was awarded the American Psychological Association's 2016 Award for Distinguished Scientific Applications of Psychology, one of the highest honors for scientific achievement by psychologists. The award is given to senior psychologists recognized for their major scientific contributions and recognizes psychologists who have made distinguished theoretical or empirical advances in psychology leading to the understanding or amelioration of important practical problems. Prof. Bharath Chandrasekaran Awarded Psychonomic Society Early Career Award
Dr. Bharath Chandrasekaran was selected to receive the Psychonomic Society’s Early Career Award. Each year the award recognizes the outstanding contributions of young scientists who have made significant contributions to scientific psychology early in their careers. The purpose of the awards is to raise the visibility of our science and of our very best young scientists within the field, within the awardees’ institutions, in the press, and in the larger community. Dr. Josh Holahan Receives UT 2016 Outstanding Graduate Advisor Award
Professor Charles (Josh) Holahan was honored for his role as the Psychology Department's Graduate Advisor when he received the UT Graduate School's Outstanding Graduate Advisor Award for 2016. The Award recognizes the exemplary service of one graduate adviser each year for their invaluable service to the university and its community of students, faculty and staff. (4/18/2016)
Professor and Chair Jacqueline Woolley Chosen as One of Alcalde Magazine's Texas 10 Most Inspiring Professors
Psychology Professor and Department Chair Jacqueline Woolley was chosen as one of Texas Exes' Alcalde magazine's Texas 10 most inspiring professors for 2016. The 2016 class includes professors from all over campus, united by one important feature: Their former students, upon reflection and with the benefit of hindsight, believe them to have left a mark on their lives. Dr. David Buss Awarded 2017 APS Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement
Professor David Buss received the Association for Psychological Science's 2017 Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award honors "the importance of mentoring in this field, as well as the dedication and impact of individuals with a distinguished record of teaching, advising, and encouraging students and colleagues who go on to have productive and influential research careers." Prof. David Yeager and Psychology Alumnus Michael Buhrmester on APA's List of Rising Stars for 2015
Dr. David Yeager and Psychology alumnus Dr. Michael Buhrmester (B.A., Plan II Honors and Psychology [2007]; PhD, Social & Personality Psychology [under Dr. William B. Swann, 2013]) were both listed as Association for Psychological Science (APS) 2015 APS Rising Stars. The Rising Star designation recognizes outstanding psychological scientists in the earliest stages of their research career post-PhD whose innovative work has already advanced the field and signals great potential for their continued contributions. Psychology Undergraduate Students Receive Unrestricted Endowed Presidential Residential Scholarships for 2016–17
Each spring, all academic departments are invited to nominate 10% of their highest performing students to receive an award of $2,500 for the coming academic year. Winners are selected based on high academic ability, demonstrated continuous participation in co-curricular and extracurricular activities, and evidence in leadership. Undergraduate Students Jessyca Turner and Alexa Hassien Awarded David Ivey Scholarships
The recipients of the $600 David Ivey Scholarship for the 2016-17 academic year are Jessyca Turner and Alexa Hassien. The David Ivey Scholarship is a memorial endowed scholarship designed to reward Psychology undergraduate students who spend time doing community service while enrolled at UT. Jessyca’s community service was with several different organizations: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Texas, KidWorks Therapy Services, Medical Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic, and AGE of Central Texas; and Alexa’s was with the Crisis Text Hotline. Adam Cobb Honored for Distinguished Contribution at APS 2016 Convention
Graduate student Adam Cobb was awarded for Distinguished Contribution for his presentation at this year's Association for Psychological Science 2016 convention in Chicago. The paper was titled, "Testosterone, Cortisol, and Hormone Stress-Reactivity Predicts War-zone Stress-Evoked Depression in Iraq-Deployed U.S. Soldiers." (8/30/2016)
Carey Pulverman & Amelia Stanton Awarded Multiple Times at IASR Annual Conference in Sweden
Of only three awards given to students by the International Academy of Sex Research (IASR), UT psychology graduate students Carey Pulverman and Amelia Stanton, of Dr. Cindy Meston's Sexual Psychophysiology Laboratory, took them all at the IASR's Annual Conference's awards ceremony in Malmö, Sweden, in July. Amelia won the best poster award and the best research proposal award, and Carey was runner-up for the best talk. (7/6/2016)
Grad Students Nicole Wen and Frank Mann Awarded University Graduate Continuing Fellowships for 2016-2017
Nicole Wen (Cognition, Culture, and Development Lab) and Frank Mann (Developmental Behavior Genetics Lab) were both awarded the Office of Graduate Studies' University Graduate Continuing Fellowships for 2016-2017. The fellowships are intended to support students who are currently enrolled in a graduate program at The University of Texas at Austin. Awards are based on major accomplishments since entering Graduate School, a well-defined program of research, a strong personal statement and letters of recommendation. (4/25/2016)
Ph.D. Students Carey Pulverman and Nicole Wen Awarded Janet T. Spence Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards
Carey Pulverman (The Sexual Psychophysiology Laboratory) and Nicole Wen (Cognition, Culture, and Development Lab), have been awarded the Psychology Department's Janet T. Spence Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for 2016. Each year the Psychology Department calls for nominations for outstanding performance by a graduate student teaching assistant in honor of Dr. Janet T. Spence, a major figure in American psychology and Professor Emeritus of the UT Department of Psychology. (4/25/2016)
Grad Student Stevie Schein Selected as 2016 Recipient of the Janet T. Spence Outstanding Assistant Instructor Award
Stevie Schein, a graduate student in the Langlois Social Development Lab, was awarded the Psychology Department's 2016 Janet T. Spence Outstanding Assistant Instructor Award. Her award letter stated that, "In a field of strong contenders, your teaching was judged to be exemplary." Stevie will be recognized at our departmental awards reception on April 28, 2016. (4/6/2016)
Five Psychology Students Awarded Undergraduate Research Fellowships for Spring 2016
Undergraduate Research Fellowships (URF) are sponsored by UT's Office of the Vice President for Research and have long been a valuable tool for undergraduate students in all disciplines across campus for developing original research ideas and projects. The Fellowships provide support for scholarly investigative projects conducted by UT Austin undergraduates, and are intended to cover costs associated with academic research projects proposed and written by student applicants and undertaken with the supervision of a University faculty member or lecturer.
