Dr. Kaya de Barbaro Selected as 2017 APS Rising Star

Assistant Professor Kaya de Barbaro was selected as a Rising Star in the Association for Psychological Science (APS) for 2017. The Rising Star designation recognizes outstanding psychological scientists in the earliest stages of their research career post-PhD whose innovative work has already advanced the field and signals great potential for their continued contributions. Prof. Mary Hayhoe Elected Fellow of the Society of Experimental Psychologists

Professor Mary Hayhoe was elected a Fellow of the Society of Experimental Psychologists (SEP), the oldest and most prestigious honorary society in Psychology. With this election, she has "joined a highly select group of distinguished empirical scientists," according to her letter of election. The membership elects only a handful of Fellows each year. Prof. Sam Gosling Receives 2017 SPSP Diener Award in Personality Psychology

Professor Samuel D Gosling has been awarded the 2017 Diener Award in Personality Psychology from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology (SPSP). The Carol and Ed Diener Award in Social Psychology is designed to recognize a mid-career scholar whose work has added substantially to the body of knowledge to the personality psychology field and/or brings together personality psychology and social psychology. His work was noted as standing out as "unusually broad, innovative, generative, and influential, not only in the field of personality itself but stretching as far as such diverse disciplines as animal behavior, architecture, and political science," and for having "generated and nourished not just one but multiple new lines of research in the field of personality psychology." Dr. Kirsten Bradbury Awarded 2017 Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award

Dr. Kirsten E Bradbury, lecturer in the Department of Psychology, has received the UT System's 2017 Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award (ROTA). The award is the Board of Regents' highest honor, offered annually in recognition of faculty members at eight academic and six health institutions who have demonstrated extraordinary classroom performance and innovation in undergraduate instruction. Given the depth and breadth of talent across the UT System, the awards program is likely one of the nation's most competitive. Read more about her award here> (6/16/2017)

Jacqueline J. Evans Receives Harry Ransom Award for Teaching Excellence for 2016-17

Dr. Jacqueline Evans, lecturer in the Department of Psychology, received the UT College of Liberal Arts' most prestigious teaching award, the Harry Ransom Award for Teaching Excellence, for the 2016–17 academic year. The award is in recognition of her exemplary performance and commitment to teaching. (5/25/2017)

Dr. David Yeager Awarded APA 2018 Boyd McCandless Award

Assistant Professor David Yeager was awarded the American Psychological Association's 2018 Boyd McCandless Award. The award recognizes young scientists who have made distinguished contributions to developmental psychology, conducted programmatic research of distinction, or made a distinguished contribution to the dissemination of developmental science. The award is for continued efforts rather than a single outstanding work. (5/16/2017)

Prof. Mary Hayhoe Recipient of the 2017 Davida Teller Award

Dr. Mary Hayhoe, Professor of Psychology, Center for Perceptual Systems, has been awarded the 2017 Davida Teller Award by the Vision Sciences Society. Dr. Ann Repp Receives UT President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award

Senior Lecturer Dr. Ann M. Repp was awarded the UT President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award for 2017. The award recognizes the "great teaching of undergraduates in the core curriculum and a record of engagement with curriculum reform and educational innovation." Dr. Kathryn Paige Harden Receives APA's 2017 Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contributions to Psychology

Associate Professor Kathryn Paige Harden has been awarded the American Psychological Association's 2017 Distinguished Scientific Award for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology for her work on individual differences. The award recognizes excellent psychologists who are at early stages of their research careers. Dr. Harden was recognized: "For exemplifying the integration of clinical psychology, human development and behavioral genetics, and for showing how to integrate genetic knowledge with the classical clinical and developmental insights into human behavior. Kathryn P. Harden has contributed to knowledge of intellectual functioning, sexual development, antisocial behavior and child temperament." Read more here>. (1/25/2017)

Dr. Elliot Tucker-Drob Awarded APS Janet Taylor Spence Award for Transformative Early Career Contributions

Associate Professor Elliot Tucker-Drob received the Association for Psychological Science Janet Taylor Spence Award in recognition of "the significant impact (his) work is already having in the field of psychological science." The award was created in honor of Janet Taylor Spence, Professor Emeritus and former chair of our department and APS' first elected president, to laud the creativity and innovative work of scientists who represent the future promise and potential of psychological science. The APS Board notes that it "places (Dr. Trucker-Drob) among the brightest minds in our field, setting an impressively high standard for the award in years to come." (1/18/2017)

Dr. David Buss Awarded 2017 APS Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement

Professor David Buss received the Association for Psychological Science's 2017 Mentor Award for Lifetime Achievement. The award honors "the importance of mentoring in this field, as well as the dedication and impact of individuals with a distinguished record of teaching, advising, and encouraging students and colleagues who go on to have productive and influential research careers." Darius Dawson Awarded APA Dissertation Research Award

Clinical graduate student Darius Dawson was awarded the American Psychological Association (APA) Dissertation Research Award for 2017 for his dissertation titled, "The influence of personal recollection of racial/ethnic discrimination experiences on cigarette craving." The Science Directorate of APA sponsors the annual competition for dissertation research funding to assist science-oriented doctoral students of psychology with research costs. Thu M Ngo Awarded Intellectual Entrepreneurship (IE) Kuhn Award

Psychology undergraduate student Thu M Ngo, along with her mentor Psychology graduate student Courtney Alexander, was awarded an Intellectual Entrepreneurship (IE) Kuhn Scholar Award for Fall 2017. The Intellectual Entrepreneurship (IE) Pre-Graduate Internship Program awarded 20 students with IE Kuhn Awards for the semester, supporting first-generation and/or economically disadvantaged college students in their academic pursuits and further enriching their pre-graduate school internship experience (e.g., traveling to conferences, potential graduate school visits, research endeavors, supplies, books etc.). Michael Mullarkey Receives Mindfulness & Acceptance SIG Student Research Award

Graduate student Michael Mullarkey received this year's Mindfulness & Acceptance SIG Student Research Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. His poster, "Disentangling the Relationship Between Self-Compassion and Transdiagnostic Risk Factors" was accepted for presentation at the 51st Annual ABCT Convention Special Interest Group Exposition, where he will present his study. Nicole Wen Awarded JoyLynn Hailey Reed Graduate Student Achievement Award

Doctoral student Nicole Wen is the first recipient of the Intellectual Entrepreneurship Consortium (IE) JoyLynn Hailey Reed Graduate Student Achievement Award. She works with Dr. Cristine Legare in the Cognition, Culture, and Development Laboratory and has served as an IE Pre-Graduate mentor for 12 students during her UT tenure. Housed in the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement (DDCE) and the Moody College of Communication, the IE program helps undergraduates learn about graduate school and chart out their career paths through mentoring, internships and advising. Grad Students Kelly Asao and Evan Stein Awarded Janet T. Spence Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards

Kelly Asao (Buss Lab of Evolutionary Psychology) and Evan Stein (Similarity and Cognition Lab) have been awarded the Psychology Department's Janet T. Spence Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award for 2017. Each year the Psychology Department calls for nominations for outstanding performance by a graduate student teaching assistant in honor of Dr. Janet T. Spence, a major figure in American psychology and Professor Emeritus of the UT Department of Psychology. (4/27/2017)

PhD Student Kelly Asao Selected for 2017 Recipient of the Janet T. Spence Outstanding Assistant Instructor Award

Kelly Asao, Buss Lab of Evolutionary Psychology, was awarded the Psychology Department's 2017 Janet T. Spence Outstanding Assistant Instructor Award. The award is given annually to a Psychology assistant instructor nominated by Psychology Department faculty and judged as exemplary. (4/27/2017)

Postdoctoral Fellow Gabriella Harari Awarded Psychology's Outstanding Dissertation Award

PhD candidate Gabriella Harari (Gosling Lab) was awarded the Psychology Department's Outstanding Dissertation Award for her dissertation, "A Window onto the Psychology of Everyday Life: Assessing Student’s Daily Behaviors Using Smartphone Sensing Methods". Ms. Harari’s research interests focus on the individual differences and outcomes associated with everyday patterns of behavior. (4/27/2017)

Psychology Undergraduate Kevin Helgren Recipient of Texas Parents’ 2017 Outstanding Student Award

Psychology undergraduate and former Student Government President Kevin Helgren received the Texas Parents’ Outstanding Student Award for 2017. Since 1951, this award has recognized two outstanding senior students (one male and one female) who demonstrate exceptional leadership, scholarship, character and service. Kevin's broad impact on campus is why Texas Parents awarded him with a 2016–17 Outstanding Student Award. Read more here> (4/14/2017)

Barbara Landberg Receives Staff Excellence Award from UT College of Liberal Arts 

Psychology Department Administrative Associate Barbara Landberg was acknowledged by the UT College of Liberal Arts for her dedication and administrative skill with their prestigious Staff Excellence Award. The College established the annual staff awards program in 1985 to honor outstanding staff members. Ms. Landberg has worked in the Psychology for 15 years. (5/11/2017)
