Advising
Academic advising is integral to fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of The University of Texas at Austin. Through academic advising, students learn to think critically about their roles and responsibilities as students and to prepare to be critical and ethical thinkers and actors in both local and global communities. Academic advising engages students beyond their own world views, while acknowledging their individual characteristics, values, and motivations as they enter, move through, and exit the Forty Acres.
Your academic advisor can provide information about:
- All majors, minors, and certificates under SCA
- University and College of Liberal Arts requirements
- Course descriptions
- Get more information about Honors programs
- Registration and the add/drop process
- Petition requests
- Internships and possible careers
- Graduation preparation
- One-on-one counseling in academic and related issues
Meet your Academic Advisor!
Lucy Vélez, Senior Academic Advisor
I feel lucky to work with y’all in SCA as your senior academic advisor, including students in AADS, AMS, MALS, RIM, and WGSS. I am a UT COLA, University of Arizona, and UT COE alum with degrees in Liberal Arts, Latin American Studies, and Cultural Studies in Education. I am also a borderlands Tejana, and mom to two very cool kids. I am easy to find, you may contact me via email (lucy.velez@austin.utexas.edu) or schedule a virtual or in-person appointment. My office location is RLP 4.412.
Book an Advising Appointment
You can schedule an advising appointment with me using Bookings. Meetings can take place through Zoom or in-person. Students are encouraged to run and review an Interactive Degree Audit (IDA) before the advising meeting. The audit will allow you to see which Core, College, Major, Minor, or Certificate requirements you need to complete toward your degree

Advising Audits
One of the best tools for advising is an advising audit. This is a computer-generated list of all your classes, as they apply to your degree plan. They are available anytime with a 24 hour advance notice.
You may also create and view your audits online using IDA, the Interactive Degree Audit. This option is available at all UT computers which have utACCESS, and you may also access IDA via Texas One Stop.
Advising Holds
You will have an Advising Hold placed on your record when either of the following conditions exist:
- You are new to the major
- You are on scholastic probation or have more than one major (the other major may place the bar)
Advising Holds are not disciplinary measures! They are simply a tool we use to ensure students who can best benefit from advising actually take the time to come into our office. Advising Holds are placed on your record just before registration. To get an Advising Hold removed, you must come in person for advising in our office or online over Zoom.
