Summer Language Courses

South Indian food

In cooperation with the South Asia Summer Language Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the South Asia Institute at UT-Austin plans to offer online courses in the South Indian language Malayalam during summer 2020. All courses will be offered through UT Extension, but administered through SAI. With over 140 contact hours and 8 weeks of classes, completing both courses over the summer meets FLAS Fellowship guidelines.

Subject to sufficient enrollments and hiring, the following courses will be available:

MAL 506 First-Year Malayalam I
MAL 507 First-Year Malayalam II

MAL 312K Second-Year Malayalam I
MAL 312L Second-Year Malayalam II


  • April 21 – Applications due
  • May 1 – Application fee of $50 due through "What I Owe"; signed acceptance letter due
  • May 1 – Notifications of any cancelled courses
  • May 15 – Remaining tuition payment due through "What I Owe" (less $50 deposit)
  • May 20 – Participants officially registered with University Extension
  • May 27 – Last day to withdraw for a full refund
  • June 4 – First session classes begin
  • June 10 – Last day to withdraw for a 50% refund
  • July 2 – Final exams for first session
  • July 4 – University Holiday; Last day to withdraw for a 25% refund
  • July 6 – Second session classes begin
  • August 7 – Final exams for second session
  • August 31 – Transcripts available from Registrar's Office
