Redefining Ratchet

Dr. Christen Smith's students created a tumblr page for their spring semester final project. The page is titled "Redefining Ratchet". It explores black women’s perspectives on controlling images, race, gender and sexuality through a reflection on the term “ratchet.” It includes interviews from students across campus, artwork, poetry, essays, open letters, graphs and statistics, and more.

About

We, as a collective, have chosen to redefine the meaning, implication, and power of the term “ratchet.” While many attribute that word to Black women and use it to degrade, shame, and ridicule us, we have chosen to use it as a source of inspiration for our project. By using the power of self-definition the collective has taken what others claim to be "ugly" and deemed it as beautiful. Some may see ratchet as "ghetto," "trashy," “uncivilized,” and "unconventional," but it, like all Black women, is also powerful, beautiful, unique and nonconforming. On this page are our art, words, pictures, videos, and expressions of what we define as "ratchet" in order to empower ourselves and the Black women around us. May this page inspire you to love yourself, appreciate the beauty, otherness, and power of Black women, and teach you to embrace and love the "ratchet" all around us.
