LMS Stylesheet and information for contributors
1. General Information
Language, Meaning and Society (LMS) accepts
original papers about linguistic anthropology as well as equipment and
book reviews closely related to significant topics of linguistic
anthropological interest. For most of the style requirements, we follow
the Chicago Manual of Style. Each
contribution should be typed, single-space, in English and should
include quotations and excerpts, notes, references, tables and figure
captions. Do not include any headers or footers including page numbers.
Margins throughout the manuscript (top, bottom, and both sides) must be
at least 1 inch/2.54 cm; the right margin should not be justified.
All phonetic characters should be limited to the International Phonetic Alphabet.
All foreign words and characters need to have interlinear gloss in English.
When writing sign language examples, please provide both glosses and
translations. Because there is no standard system for the
representation of signed languages (such as the IPA for spoken
languages), we encourage frame grabs and/or video clips in addition to
written representations.
For further details, consult the American Anthropological Association Style Guide and Examples and Glosses of Sign Language and Linguistics.
Original papers
Submissions should be no longer than 8,000 words.
Equipment review
In
this section we encourage submissions about any tools that are used for
the purpose of linguistic anthropological analyses. Include the name of
the software or hardware, where and by whom it was developed and for
what general purposes. Briefly describe a project you have been using
the equipment for and evaluate its effectiveness. In your evaluation,
include a summary of your theoretical and/or methodological concerns
and the ways in which the software/hardware you are evaluating enabled
or prohibited analysis. Screen shots and other visual representations
are encouraged. Submissions should be no longer than 1,500 words.
Book review
Submissions should be no longer than 1,500 words.
2. Submission procedure
We accept manuscripts in digital form. Articles should be submitted via email as a PDF file AND either a Word file or in Rich Text Format. Figures, pictures and artwork must be camera-ready (at least 300 dpi in JPEG format).
For those who have video clips, do not attach them to the email but mail them to us as QuickTime files saved on a CD.
