Performing Blackness Series Renamed After WCAAAS Faculty Affiliate, Dr. Omi Osun Joni L. Jones
Omi Osun Joni L. Jones

As we say farewell to Dr. OmiOsun Joni L. Jones after 28 years of teaching at UT Austin, let us take time to reflect on one of the most important things Dr. Jones created in her time on campus. Dr. Jones placed UT Black Studies on the national map in terms of Black performance by creating two important initiatives:Performing Blackness Series and theVisiting Performing Artist Residency. Through both of these endeavors, she celebrated blackness by making a space for black artists to work, create, and reflect on black life and culture. She created a place for them to share their work, share their wisdom and to pause long enough to create new work in community with students, faculty, staff, and community members—not necessarily in that order.
