The student research assistant will be required to compile, analyze, and summarize archival and
quantitative data on special operations forces (SOF), specifically the Marine Corps Forces, Special 
Operations Command (MARSOC). The intent of this research project is to investigate the reasons for 
organizational successes and challenges within the SOF community. 

While a research assistant is expected to contribute in many ways to the research project, typical 
responsibilities include the following: 

• Search for archival materials, integrate them, and write a coherent report on the evolution of the 
Marine Corps in recent decades 
• Collect and analyze quantitative data 
• Attend research interviews being conducted by the Center’s SOF program, summarize them in 
writing, operate video equipment during the interviews, and edit the footage 
• Prepare, maintain, and update website materials 
• Summarize project results 
• Prepare articles, reports, and presentations 
Required qualifications: 
• Knowledge or experience in military studies; Familiarity with commonly used military acronyms 
and terminology is not required, but would be of added value 
• Quantitative analysis skills 
• Excellent research skills 
• Excellent writing and communication skills 
• Basic video editing skills 
• Excellent data management and organizational skills 
• Preferred experience in ArcGIS and other mapping software 

This is a paid position of up to 10 hours per week, to be determined in consultation with the selected 
candidate. Candidates with more of these skills will be prioritized. The position is expected to last for 8- 
12 weeks in spring 2015, starting in March 2015. The exact start and end dates will be determined with 
the selected applicant.
