Austin State Hospital

Fall 2015 Site Review

Position: Undergraduate Psychology Intern
Student: Psychology Junior

Austin State Hospital is a psychiatric hospital for inpatient care; as an undergraduate psychology intern at ASH, I was able to gain direct exposure to treatment and care that I otherwise would not have received until graduate school/a clinical practicum. The work environment is incredibly variable—different things are happening every day—and the people receiving treatment at the hospital are just as diverse. This variety means valuable experience in a wide range of mental health services and clients.

As an undergraduate intern, I worked very closely with my internship supervisor, who often helped direct me to the classes, sessions, and meetings that closely suited my interests. The program was structured on a very individual basis; I had the chance to sit down with my supervisor at the beginning of the semester and outline the types of learning experiences I would most value as a student intern.

For me personally, this involved specific clinical exposure—observing individual and group therapy, attending staff Treatment Team Planning Meetings, and shadowing for various forms of assessment, in particular. She then connected me with 2-3 other clinical or counseling psychologists whom I could shadow/learn from. I had the chance to observe each of these individuals in practice on multiple occasions (in both individual and group settings), as well as receive one-on-one training in both the WAIS-IV and the MMPI-2 assessments. Additionally, one of my favorite parts of the internship was the chance to sit in on rehab sessions/classes in the Child and Adolescent Unit.

An internship at the hospital is definitely a very direct insight into what it means to provide extensive care for individuals unable to perform these services for themselves. It is full of applicable experience in the world of health care, and it is very fulfilling and hands-on work. This is a program that involved me truly interacting with the people I eventually hope to serve.
