Foodways Texas

Spring 2011 Site Review

Position: Student Intern
Student: French & Plan II Senior

Nestled in the heart of Austin’s burgeoning food scene and close to places like Franklin’s Barbeque and the Blue Dahlia, the Foodways Texas office diligently works to preserve Texas food culture. Foodway’s website states that it is “an organization founded by scholars, chefs, journalists, restaurateurs, farmers, rancher and other across the state of Texas who have made it their mission to preserve, promote and celebrate the diverse food cultures of Texas.” Having a passion for the same gastronomic curation methods is just one of the responsibilities of a Foodways intern.

A typical day as a Foodways intern always involves eating or discussing some type of food. Whether it’s working an event like the “Up in Smoke” party as part of the International Association of Culinary Professionals Conference, dishing out Gulf Coast Gumbo at our first symposium on Galveston Island, or talking about the week’s objectives over iced teas at Rio Rita’s on 7th street, Foodways revolves around the cultural and social implications of food. Of course there are more logistical tasks – like emails, phone calls, spread sheets or calculations – but they involve networking with some of the most important people in the Austin and National food industry.

There are also more creative tasks, like map generation, blog posts, newsletters, graphic design, press releases and web related projects. While some of these responsibilities seem somewhat mundane, they all have Foodways flair and allow an intern to practice administrative skills essential to a food industry organization. We work in the office, at home via Skype or googlechat, but mostly on location at the various foodie events we host. It’s never a dull or tasteless moment with Foodways Texas.
