New York Public Library

Summer 2011 Site Review

Position: Manuscripts & Archives Intern
Student: History Junior

The New York Public Library is a wonderful place to work. It is filled with people who care very much about what they do, and if you are at all considering library school or just want to continue a humanities education, working at the NYPL as a summer intern is a fulfilling and meaningful way to spend your summer.

I had a great deal of flexibility in choosing what I wanted to work on, and would recommend this internship to anyone interested in New York City History.

The library has many divisions and offers many different kinds of internships, some at its main branch—where I worked—and others at its different branches.

At the division of Archives and Manuscripts, interns are permitted a great deal of flexibility in choosing their assignments and it is important to be both self-motivated and self-sufficient. To that end, it is also important to be clear in one’s own mind about subjects you are truly interested in, because it is likely you will be spending a great deal of time thinking about them.
