Summer 2010 Site Review

Position: Human Resources Intern - Houston Texans
Student: Economics Junior

For most Texans fans, the dream of coming to Reliant stadium every day is a mere fantasy. For the employees of the Houston Texans, it’s a reality. My experience with the Houston Texans can be described and exciting and unforgettable. This is not your typical part time summer job; it was a learning experience that I hope to relive again one day.

My day starts off by walking past the giant bull statues into the service level of the stadium. I was lucky enough to be given my own office area right in the middle of the business operations side of the Texans office floor. To my right is the football operations side. There contains the offices and minds of the Texans defense, offense, and etc. At first, the intimidation of these men and athletes merely walking around the offices was high. However, maintaining a level of professionalism was important to me. At times, I found myself pretending not to notice the football stars and coaches that I once complimented and admired on television.

However, my daily job allows me access to these employees because they are just employees! With the Houston Texans, my human resources duties included signature or information from the employees of the organization. On many of occasion, that included the new offensive coordinator Rick Dennison or star player Andre Johnson.

This internship is not “normal” by any means. The excitement and competitive atmosphere that surrounds a stadium and a professional sports team is high. Just like its athletes, everyone wants to be the best and win every game. This is an attitude that I learned is constant around the offices. My roles of deadlines and reports were to be prompt and quick like a pass. I was thrown into the internship hands on with duties such as solo interviews, background checks, and benefits. I feel that I got more than a taste of the industry. It feels more like an entire piece! I am very blessed to be able to work here every day with people who are extremely passionate about sports and the community. Although no day was “typical, it was always a learning experience.
