Public Citizen

Spring 2015 Site Review

Position: Communication Intern
Student: International Relations and Global Studies Senior

As a Communications Intern for Public Citizen, the general duties include social media managing, content creation, and helping out whenever needed. Social media management includes two different Twitters and two different Facebook accounts, so it is important to recognize and remember the different voices of each. Furthermore, Twitter Chats and social media kits are created when needed.

For example, this upcoming Thursday, Public Citizen will be going to Houston to accompany EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy on a “Toxic Tour”. As preparation for the event, I created graphics for the event, scheduled Tweets ahead of time, and have promoted it via different social media outlets. In terms of content creation, blogs are generally written for Public Citizen rather than the Clean Gulf Commerce Coalition, which is a coalition that Public Citizen is included in. As a Communications Intern, I head all of Clean Gulf Commerce Coalitions social media.

Over all, I learned a lot about environmental and ethics issues, along with how the Legislature works, while I interned for Public Citizen.
In terms of the internship site, everyone at Public Citizen is extremely passionate about what they do and are always around to give a helping hand.  Through my interactions with them I have learned so much, whether it be with the Policy Interns, the lawyers, or my direct supervisor. Everyone is passionate about making a change, and that is something that one cannot always find at every internship site. As I am nearing the end of my internship, I am extremely happy that I was able to have such a great experience and encourage anyone to take up an opportunity to intern with Public Citizen.
