Rodney Kunick, DDS

Spring 2011 Site Review

Position: Marketing/PR Intern
Student: Plan II Junior

This semester, I interned with Dr. Randy Kunik. Unlike most other internships, I happened to create this opportunity for myself. Dr. Kunik was looking for someone to help him with marketing a new Invisalign offer and I took this as a perfect opportunity to create my own internship. After he accepted my proposal, I started working at the beginning of the semester.

I work on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays. On Monday and Wednesday, I work from 7:30-12:30 AM and on Tuesdays, I work from 8-10 AM. Monday and Wednesdays, I get the bulk of my work done. I contact any one that needs to be contacted, make fliers, facebook ads, research new ways we can get the word out about our offer and other marketing strategies. I rely on Tuesdays to catch up on emails and other miscellaneous tasks. Two hours is not enough time to start a new project so it is a time for me to take care of minor things. I usually check in with Dr. Kunik and Gina, the office manager, every Monday and tell them what I plan on doing this week and how things are going. This keeps me accountable for my work since this is an independent project.

I have learned a lot in the past semester especially because it was an independent project. I was forced to make mistakes and learn from them by myself. More importantly, there was more responsibility placed on me. It has definitely been an intense learning experience with lots of pressure but I think overall, it has been a really great experience because I learned more than I possibly could have with a normal internship. I definitely encourage students to find their own opportunities too. Not only has the internship, itself, been a great, valuable learning experience but because I found it myself it has made me look a lot of business opportunities in a different way. I see every business as an opportunity for me to involve myself because there are definitely ways you can do that, you just need to think in bigger and broader terms and create the opportunity for yourself and market your skills and as a student, there is no better time than the present.
