Universal Pictures International

Summer 2008 Site Review

Student: American Studies and Spanish Senior
Position: Acquisitions Intern

My internship was at Universal Pictures International in Los Angeles, CA. I interned for the Senior Vice President of Acquisitions, Jason Resnick, and his assistant Lisa Kant. The internship lasted for nine weeks and was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

My day started at 9AM every morning. I had my own cubicle and computer. First, I would read the trades (Variety, Hollywood Reporter, etc.) and update the database with all the information on deals that were made or movies in development. The database is perhaps the most important aspect of the Acquisitions department. It is a program that contains over 70,000 films that the team tracks for a possible buy. I would update it constantly throughout the day but it was imperative to do it in the morning and send out the articles to the team.

Once I was done with that, I would print out scripts that Jason would need to read over the weekend or update the database for recent coverage that had come in on a script. Coverage is very important to the team because it basically outlines the script and offers creative thoughts on whether or not it is worth Universal’s time. More often than not they are correct and they are an essential part of how the business works.

I typically took lunch at 12pm and manned the phones when Lisa was taking her break. It was very important that the phones be answered every time they rang. Distinguished people and executives would call the office every day and it was imperative that we treat them with respect and answer their calls.

I usually left the office around 7pm if there wasn’t anything else needed.
