Vanity Fair

Summer 2011 Site Review

Position: Editorial Intern
Student: History Junior

Working at Vanity Fair as an editorial intern is a good idea for any person who thinks he or she might want to work at a national magazine, especially in an editorial capacity. Vanity Fair is a good magazine for someone uncertain whether they’re more interested in pictures or words, news or fashion—the publication is notable for covering a wide-range of subjects.

The day begins between 9 and 10, and interns sit down amongst one another at their own desk, telephone, computer, and “work” email account. Assignments are doled out throughout the day, either by email or in person.

Editorial interns help process in-coming books scheduled to be reviewed, create research files for writers, assist with deliveries and pick-ups, gather articles for editors researching a particular story, work in the magazine’s library and back-issues closet, and help editorial assistants, sometimes even sitting in when they are away.

Being an intern helped me to understand how a magazine gets published and individual stories get written. Working at the office was exciting and there was always something to do or read.
