Riggs & Ray, P.C.

Summer 2015

Position: Admin Assistant
Student: Rhetoric and Writing Senior

Riggs & Ray is a law firm that specializes in Administrative Law. My job is to be an Administrative Assistant to the Office Manager, Legal Assistants, and Attorneys. Working in a small law firm is a fun experience where you get to witness attorneys helping people and see the practical application of a Liberal Arts degree. I got to apply the editing skills I learned at UT Austin and I got to learn more about how to communicate and organize more efficiently with people who don’t have a lot of time to talk.

I usually got to help with time sheets and billing for the attorneys. With time sheets, I would edit the client correspondence that each attorney sends out in order to report the attorneys’ activities. This was a rewarding experience because the law firm was so small that I got to be a part of the process to create the standard wording that would communicate professionalism for Riggs & Ray.

I would also learn a lot from the Office Manager, Ana. She would teach me how to think two steps ahead of the attorneys when it came to organizing and processing their files. We would have a project of clearing out the file room and creating client correspondence for returning client files back to them. Ana would give me tips on how to be clear and concise when getting attorney consent for clients and teach me how to be more organized.

Creating a more professional client experience for the small law firm was very much appreciated by the attorneys. Often they would thank or celebrate our efforts. Most recently we had a luncheon at an expensive restaurant for interns that help in moving offices.
I would highly recommend a small law firm to intern at just because it is a very supportive and opportune work environment.
