Teacher Retirement System

Fall 2015 Site Review

Position: Internal Audit
Student: Economics senior

My typical day as an investments internal audit intern at The Teacher Retirement System of Texas consists of completing various tasks throughout the day. I glance at my emails before going to bed every night before walking into the office.

Sometimes, I have meetings earlier in the day and I like to be informed so that I can plan ahead. For example, should I bring a lunch because there are several meetings or should I go home quickly to eat at my apartment and feed my dog? My day begins by driving into the underground parking garage in lovely downtown Austin at 8am. It takes about 7 minutes to get from the lowest level of the parking garage to the Internal Audit wing of the building.

The first things I do are turn on the computer, put my lunch in the refrigerator, and then get an ice-cold glass of water. I check my emails in order of oldest to newest, and reply to anything that needs to be responded to and put important emails to the side for further review. I also take around 15 minutes to catch up on pension fund news and daily market news from either Bloomberg or another news source. I need to have a basic understanding of what is going on in the economy because it’s very interesting and it also affects what goes on at TRS. For example, whenever something pops up on the news about hedge fund fees I end up hearing about it at a meeting.

Once I complete my routine tasks, I speak with the Senior Auditor and he shows/tells me what to tasks to complete for the day. Depending on what part of the quarter it is, I may attend interview meetings with TRS employees and take notes in order to write a report based on their input on the subjects that need to be documented. Other times, I go to my bosses’ office and listen in on important phone calls.
Sometimes it’s simple and common sense and other days it’s confusing. It feels great to accomplish difficult tasks and have the opportunity to interact with such talented employees.
