Advising

Academic advising is integral to fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of The University of Texas at Austin. Through academic advising, students learn to think critically about their roles and responsibilities as students and to prepare to be critical and ethical thinkers and actors in both local and global communities. Academic advising engages students beyond their own world views, while acknowledging their individual characteristics, values, and motivations as they enter, move through, and exit the Forty Acres.

Many students, and their families, ask a very important question regarding the major: What can I do with a degree in Mexican American and Latina/o Studies? We counsel and advise students in developing their individual degree plan so that it will prepare them most effectively for the career they choose. We also discuss the numerous graduate and professional school opportunities that are provided by a Bachelor of Arts degree in MALS.

Your academic advisor provides information about (1) the MALS major and minor, (2) University and College of Liberal Arts requirements, (3) course descriptions, (4) assists with registration and the add/drop process, (5) helps with petition requests, (6) provides information on internships and possible careers, (7) graduation preparation, and (8) offers one-on-one counseling in academic and related issues.

**Please note that pre-registration advising is REQUIRED for all MALS majors.*

You can view Luis Guevara’s availability and schedule an appointment with him using Calendly. Meetings can take place through Zoom or in person as requested by the student.

Advising Audits:

One of the best tools for advising is an advising audit. This is a computer-generated list of all courses taken by a student, as they apply to various requirements and the MALS degree plan. Students can create and view an advising audit online anytime using the Interactive Degree Audit.
