Scholarships and Awards
Below is a list of scholarships, fellowships, and awards for which graduate students can apply.
Dan C. Danciger Scholarship for Hebrew Studies: PhD and MA Students
This modest scholarship supports students who advance from one level of Hebrew to the next (usually, Intensive Hebrew I to Intensive Hebrew II, or HEB 320L to HEB 346C). Applications for the 2024-2025 award are due October 18, 2024.
FLAS Fellowships: PhD and MA Students
The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships provide support to students studying area studies and/or modern foreign languages. CMES does not currently offer FLAS Fellowships. The next cycle where we may be accepting applications for FLAS Fellowships would be Fall 2026.
Students interested in a FLAS Fellowship may apply through other centers on campus, such as: CES for Turkish, CREEES for Persian/Tajiki and Turkish, and SAI for Persian.
Professional Development Awards: PhD and MA Students
The Graduate School allocates money to DMES (PhD) and CMES (MA) at the beginning of each academic year, to support our students’ participation in professional conferences. The Graduate Coordinator will send out information about how to apply for a Professional Development Award at the beginning of the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms. The application consists of the student providing information about the conference they are participating in, proof of their acceptance to the conference, and their paper’s abstract. Awards can range from $100 to $1,000.
Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies Support
The Schusterman Center for Jewish Studies is a Center on campus with whom DMES has several affiliated faculty. The SCJS is an endowed Center, and therefore has several fellowship opportunities that may be relevant to students in DMES, hence their inclusion on this list.
