Plan II Travel Grant Information

Travel Grant Application

FALL 2020 travel grant notice: Due to COVID-19, university-sanctioned travel for business or study is suspended through December 31, 2020. As a result, travel grants will not be awarded during the fall 2020 semester. Check back for updates about Spring 2021 in January.

PURPOSE:  Plan II Travel Grants are made to Plan II students only, for academic purposes such as:

  • Attending an academic conference in your field
  • Study abroad (any program, whether or not sponsored by UT)
  • UT programs in other U.S. cities such as the Archer program in D.C. or Semester in L.A.
  • Plan II does not help you pay for nonacademic travel or student organization related travel
  • Travel grants are for individual student travel expenses related to academics, not for student groups or associations
  • Thesis-related travel expenses should be submitted via the Thesis Grant application. Please do not submit both applications for the same travel proposal.

NOTE: Plan II Travel Grants are not intended to cover the entire cost of your proposed travel or project. Only one type of grant will be awarded per student, per travel program or project.

WHEN TO APPLY:  Plan II conducts two rounds of grant applications each year. For travel over winter break or in the spring semester, students should apply in the fall application round. For travel in the summer semester OR the following fall/full academic year, students should apply in the spring. For Maymester programs, students should apply during the spring application round.

AMOUNT:  Awards typically range between $500 and $2,000. In most cases, Plan II will pay only part of your costs for the trip. You must therefore seek funds from other sources as well, but your Plan II application must show all of your expenses for the trip. See links on the right sidebar for other sources of study abroad funding to explore.

SPECIAL NOTE - RESTRICTED TRAVEL: The University of Texas System requires all travel to countries with U.S. Department of State Travel Warnings to be reviewed and approved by the University's International Oversight Committee (IOC). Students wanting to travel to restricted regions must obtain Restricted Region Travel Approval to receive funding. We strongly advise students to complete this form during the program application process. Waiting to complete the petition process could result in a student not receiving a travel clearance or denial in time for departure. A list of restricted regions can be found on the International Office's website. Students who are traveling to a restricted region as part of a UT group program should check with their program's administrator about restricted region approval.

INDEPENDENT TRAVEL: Students who are traveling abroad independently will be required to register their travel with the International Office to receive funding.
