What is Plan II?

An honors program with an unusual name, Plan II is for students with intense curiosity about what makes the human experience meaningful. If you are the kind of student who wants to understand how subjects as varied as biology, literature, history, psychology, physics, economics, mathematics, and art all intersect, Plan II might be for you. 

Plan II (created in 1935 as an interdisciplinary alternative to the traditional “Plan I” majors) offers a flexible, four-year course of study that students can pair with other majors at UT. The depth and breadth of Plan II courses gives students studying traditional majors such as Business, Natural Sciences, and Engineering a deeper understanding of their fields. The program offers all students the opportunity to participate in small, discussion-based courses and delve deeply into a senior thesis project of their own design.

Plan II classes emphasize critical reading and thinking, offer engaging discussions, and develop exceptional writing and communication skills. The curriculum is also flexible enough to accommodate Study Abroad (in fact we encourage it!). In addition, Plan II professors are not only specialists in their fields but also award-winning teachers - truly some of the best that UT has to offer.
