Locker Room Talk: Intersections of Gender, Masculinity and Violence

Friday Mar 10, 2017 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Sports continue to play a central role in shaping how we understand gender identities and who has the right to watch and play sports. Sports have also been a focal point for forms of violence towards women. Female athletes in particular are too often forced to conform to narrow, Western-centric definitions of appropriate ideals of femininity. Is so-called “locker room talk” just “boys having fun”? And how might sports be changed so that they are truly inclusive to all, regardless of gender presentation, religious preference or racial identity? In conversation on these important topics will be the athlete Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, anthropologist Katrina Karkazis and the journalist Jessica Luther. The event will be chaired by the British sports journalist and TV correspondentKeme Nzerem. The event is free and open to the public. Please join us for this important conversation!
