RIM Major

Race, Indigeneity & Migration (RIM) is a new interdisciplinary major offered by the College of Liberal Arts with faculty and courses from AADS, Asian American studies, Latina/o studies, LGBTQ studies, Native American and Indigenous studies and Women and Gender studies. Students pursuing the RIM major will gain multicultural and comparative knowledge around issues of race, gender, sexuality, indigeneity and global migration at the sites of law, policy, economies, cultural spheres and public education.

The RIM major requires 27 semester hours of coursework, including at least 15 hours of upper-division AFR coursework and 18 hours in residence. The following courses are required:  

1. RIM 301 Introduction to Race, Indigeneity, and Migration

2. AFR 301 Introduction to Black Studies or
    AAS 301 Introduction to Asian American Studies or
    MAS 301 Introduction to Mexican American and Latina/o Studies or
    HIS 317L Introduction to American Indian History or
    WGS 350 Introduction to Women’s and Gender Studies

3. RIM 350 Contemporary Issues in Race Indigeneity, and Migration
4. Nine (9) hours in one track including a tools course:

  • A. Critical and Comparative Race
  • B. Migration and Refugee Flows
  • C. Indigeneity D. Gender, Sexuality, and Justice
  • E. Teaching Race, Indigeneity, and Migration

5. Additional Course from Any Track

6. Additional Course from Any Track

7. RIM 378 Race Indigeneity, and Migration
