  • Community Engagement Award

    LLILAS Benson Community Engagement Award

Objective: LLILAS Benson educates students to actively engage the world. Students acquire a first-class education in Latin American Studies, working with faculty who generate knowledge that is crucial to building a more just, safer, and more prosperous Latin America. We seek to inspire our students, our faculty, and the communities we serve to change the world for the better.

  • LLILAS Benson Digital Scholarship Fellowships

The Digital Scholarship Office at LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections, The University of Texas at Austin, offers six to eight fellowships each year that provide up to a $3,000 stipend for students and scholars to undertake research or teaching projects in Latin American, U.S. Latine, African Diaspora, and/or Indigenous Studies using data, born-digital sources (e.g. websites, social media posts), or the Benson Latin American Collection’s digitized holdings AND digital methods/platforms.

This is a remote fellowship—applicants must limit their proposals to data and/or digitized content from the Benson Latin American Collection or its Latin American partners. Special consideration and funding will be given to proposals that contribute to these joint initiatives:

    • Archiving Black América: A LLILAS initiative seeking to acknowledge and redress the anti-blackness of the archive. One award will be made to a proposal that meaningfully and ethically engages with collection materials and/or cultural heritage data created by or representing the Black diaspora in the Caribbean and Latin America.
    • AVAnnotate Project: An Initiative for Digital Humanities project that seeks to support the use of audiovisual materials in teaching, research, and public engagement, and the development of ethical practices and protocols for this type of cultural heritage. Up to three proposals will be awarded, and fellows will have the opportunity to apply for a project extension grant if funding is available. Upper-division undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and community scholars, regardless of institutional affiliation, may apply. These fellowships are funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Proposals must be submitted by FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2023. Please see our call for proposals for more information and application instructions: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ssJfozWAZ5qqsP6-GMMZ6YMsaUV_MU6RLfkCAH24g5I/

  • The 2024 Lozano Long Conference: Call for Proposals

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies invites faculty affiliates to submit proposals for the 2024 Lozano Long Conference.

The annual Lozano Long Conference is a large, multi-disciplinary event that engages with a relevant Latin American Studies academic concern, but that has also resonance with current political, social, economic, scientific, or cultural phenomena affecting the region.

    Proposals should include:

    • The names of two or more LLILAS faculty members who are willing to serve as conference organizers

    • A statement identifying the topic and goals of the conference; the proposed event must have a Latin American/Caribbean focus (150 words)
    • A brief statement on the importance of the conference for Latin American Studies, and for your disciplines (150 words)
    • A tentative description of the conference format (i.e., conference model and potential speakers, special activities, etc.); please include a short list of potential keynote speakers for the conference
    • A preliminary budget, including a list of UT units that could be interested in co-sponsoring this event

    Priority will be given to:

    • Interdisciplinary proposals that address one of the following thematic foci:
      • Energy Transition, Environmental Change, and Social Justice
      • Language and Human Mobility
      • Latin America and the Global South
      • Aesthetics, Culture, Politics, and/or Society in the Digital Age

    • Multidisciplinary proposals
    • Proposals endorsed by additional UT faculty members who work on related issues and who could potentially participate in the conference

Conference proposals will be evaluated by the LLILAS Executive Committee.

As the sponsor and organizer of the conference, LLILAS will be involved from the initial planning stages in the key programmatic, financial, and logistical decisions of the event, including: the selection of the keynote speaker, budget allocations, publicity, and general logistics. Our staff will work with the faculty committee from the beginning to make sure that the conference contributes to the overall mission of LLILAS Benson.

Please send your proposals to p.diaz@austin.utexas.edu by September 30, 2023.

If you have questions about any of the components of the proposal, feel free to contact Paloma Díaz or Adela Pineda.
