Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What do I need to do to participate in the CoLA Graduation Celebration?
A: In order to participate, graduates need to complete three steps:
1. Apply to Graduate (Deadline: May 6, midnight) or sign the walk list if you are a Fall 2021 or Summer 2022 graduate
2. Complete RSVP form (Deadline: May 8, midnight)
3. Sign up for 15-minute arrival window (Deadline: May 13, 5 pm - will be emailed to grads on May, 9)
Q: Why a Graduation Celebration and not a traditional ceremony?
A: Yes, the Turtle Pond event does looks a little different from “traditional” ceremonies that may occur in the Erwin Center or Gregory Gym. While those emphasize long speeches and pomp and circumstance, their size and formality leave little room for personal celebration of each individual graduates. The Turtle Pond allows us to focus on the most important part of graduation: you, the graduate. You will still walk across a formal stage as your name is announced. Instead of your loved ones being across a large venue looking at a screen, however, they will be mere feet away taking photos and cheering you on. After crossing the stage and posing for formal portraits, our Deans and your faculty will be waiting to congratulate you and meet all of your loved ones.
We celebrated both the Class of 2020 and 2021 at the Turtle Pond last year. The intimacy and individual attention were revered and appreciated by the graduates and families alike as they were able to celebrate closely together along with our staff, faculty, and leadership. We received nothing but glowing and positive feedback from everyone who attended. Based on that feedback from our graduates and families, the College intentionally decided to celebrate the Class of 2022 at the Turtle Pond. Your resiliency and achievement in the face of unrelenting challenges is awe-inspiring. Commencement is such a treasured time for the College because we get to celebrate you and your fellow graduates with all of your loved ones and this year - and format - is no different.
Q: Is there a chance the Graduation Celebration will be cancelled and “go-virtual” ?
A: As of now, there are no plans to cancel and/or go virtual. We are dedicated to celebrating the Class of 2022 in person as safe as possible.
Q: Will I need to RSVP?
A: Yes. Graduates with an approved graduation application will be emailed a RSVP link to complete.
Note, the University will be sending additional communication about the University Wide celebration. Additional steps may follow.
Q: Do I need to wear a cap and gown? If so, where can I buy them?
A: You are welcome (and encouraged) to wear a cap and gown. Should you wish to purchase regalia, it can be purchased here. Please note that in order to receive your regalia prior to the Commencement Weekend, orders must be placed by April 29.
Q: How many guests can I bring with me to the Turtle Pond?
A: As of now, we have no restrictions on guests. However, we ask that you take into consideration that the venue is fairly small and this is an intimate event when deciding who to invite.
The event will be live streamed for those who cannot make it to the Turtle Pond.
Q: What if I'm a double major?
A: If you are completing a degree in HDO, Plan II, Economics, or Psychology, please plan on attending their individual celebrations. If you are double majoring and one of your degrees is from the four departments listed above, you will only be attending the individual celebration.
If you are completing degrees in majors other than the above four, please plan on attending your primary major's celebration. You can find your primary major by looking at the first major listed on your grade report. This will likely be the major that you entered UT with.
