In the College of Liberal Arts, the Student Division within the Office of the Dean is responsible for upholding and enforcing University rules and policies as outlined in the University Catalogs. An overview of the most common policies is available in the Student Division FAQ. In rare instances, the University may permit colleges to grant exceptions to these policies in light of urgent, substantiated, and non-academic events. If you believe your situation may warrant consideration for an exception under these criteria, please review the process below and then meet with a Student Division advisor.
Please note admissions decisions must be appealed to the Office of Admissions and petitions for degree modifications or substitutions must be initiated with the academic advisor in your major.

- Step 1: Meet with Student Division Advisor
After reading the relevant policy, meet with a Student Division Advisor to confirm if appeal is necessary or appropriate, determine the deadline to submit for consideration, and ask questions on process.
- Step 2: Prepare Your Documents
An appeal requires a detailed, written narrative of your situation and request and must include relevant supporting documentation. The Student Division advisor you meet with will help you identify salient factors to address and what documentation to include.
- Step 3: Submit Your Appeal
All appeal documents must be submitted to the Student Division within the Office of the Dean via email to COLAStuDiv@austin.utexas.edu. You’ll receive emailed confirmation once it’s been received.
- Step 4: Watch for Outreach
As we weigh the specifics of your situation against University and College policies, it’s occasionally necessary to ask for more information. If we have questions about what you submitted or need more information or documentation, we'll request it via email.
