Why study Italian?

Italian can boost career prospects in international business, fashion, design, publishing, translation, teaching, cuisine, and non-for-profits.

Italian is a diaspora language with over 80 million people worldwide claiming Italian heritage.

Italy has the most UNESCO world heritage sites and is the birthplace of humanism and the Renaissance.

Italian makes an excellent double major with popular UT majors like Business, Government, and International Relations.

Italian is not only a phonetic language but also melodic and musical making it easy to learn and fun to speak.

UT Austin has numerous faculty-led and affiliate programs in Italy.
Pathway to the Italian Major:

ITL 601C “Beginning Italian” & ITL 611C “Intermediate Italian”

ITL 320 “Advanced Italian”
-
Three hours in ITL courses chosen from:
- ITL 321 “Introduction to Italian Literature”
- ITL 325C “Italian Through Cinema”
- ITL 328 “Composition and Conversation”
- Three hours in Italian Civilization (ITC)
**Examples of ITC courses include ITC 336 “Italian Cinema”; ITC 347R “Race and Migration: The Mediterranean”; and ITC 348 “Dante”

Fifteen hours in additional Italian Upper Division. Up to three hours of Italian Civilization may be counted for three hours of additional Italian Upper Division. Up to three hours of LA 320 “Internship” may be counted for three hours of additional Italian Civilization.
**Examples of Upper Division courses include ITL 327C “Italian Through Cuisine”; ITL 330C “The Language of Italian Crime Fiction”; and ITL 347 “Italian Popular Cinema.”
TOTAL: 36 hours
