Forum: "Mexico's Human Rights and Governance Challenges in the AMLO Era"

Tue, February 12, 2019 | Benson Latin American Collection, 2nd floor

12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

Andrés Manuel López Obrador arrived in office in December 2018 amid outsized expectations that his presidency will bring sweeping change in favor of economically and socially marginalized Mexicans, including the millions of Mexicans affected by insecurity and human rights abuses. However, the deep-rooted nature of violence and Mexico's institutional deficiencies have generated questions regarding the government's ability to bring about meaningful change. Please join us as we discuss the enormous challenges facing the AMLO administration and assess its preliminary policies on security, justice, and social policy.

In this forum, moderated by LLILAS Benson Mexico Center director Ricardo Ainslie, experts will address an array of topics related to the challenges listed above. Participants include Jake Dizard (fellow, Robert Strauss Center for International Security and Law), Janice Gallagher (Global Urban Studies, Rutgers), Adriana Obregón (consultant on violence prevention and social development, former director general of Social Policy and Employment for the Mexican presidency), and Alejandro Ponce (World Justice Project).

The forum is the public-facing portion of the Inaugural Puentes Summit on Security and Governance, an initiative of the LLILAS Benson Mexico Center that has been funded by Fernando Macías and Adriana Pacheco. The yearly summit will foster collaboration between UT Austin scholars and their Mexican counterparts to jointly address and work on problems relevant to Mexico and/or Mexico and the United States.

Free and open to the public. Light lunch served. For more information, contact Paloma Díaz
