Overview
A core component of LLILAS Benson’s Public Engagement program is training of K-12 teachers to enhance knowledge and teaching about Latin America and U.S. Latino/as. Recognizing the increasingly diverse student population within the Austin area and beyond, we strive to support multicultural and culturally responsive teaching, especially for Latino/a students.
As part of our K-12 programming, we offer:
- Teacher professional development workshops,
- Curriculum units and lesson plans,
- A lending library with reference materials, children’s books, and cultural trunks, and
- Cultural and art events and speaker series
LLILAS is a founding member of Hemispheres, the international outreach consortium at UT Austin that offers educational programming on Western Europe; Latin America; the Middle East; Russia, East Europe, and Eurasia; and South Asia. Many of our K-12 activities are organized through Hemispheres in order to provide a comparative perspective on global issues.
To stay up to date on events and new resources for K-12 teachers, sign up for the Hemispheres e-newsletter.
Workshop, curriculum, and many other LLILAS Benson Public Engagement resources are possible through the support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center grant.
