Course Credit for Research

College of Liberal Arts

This caption describes the image above.

Many departments in the College of Liberal Arts offer a course credit option for undergraduate students pursuing research.

In most cases, students register for an upper-division conference course in their chosen major and use that time to pursue their research project.

There are some majors within Liberal Arts that require research as part of their degree requirements.

For example:

  • Liberal Arts Plan II undergraduate students are required to complete a thesis project prior to graduation.
  • Undergraduate students in European Studies must complete an independent research project as part of their degree plan.
  • Women's and Gender Studies has an option for research or an internship in their degree plan.
  • Psychology offers PSY 357, a structured opportunity for undergraduates to obtain firsthand, supervised research experience in psychology.

The undergraduate research course credit opportunities available in degree plans and within departments can change, so please check with your department for what they currently offer.

The Office of Undergraduate Research

Additionally, visit Course Credit for Undergraduate Research to learn more about the process of obtaining credit for participating in research, per the University's Undergraduate College:

You may be able to obtain course credit through Undergraduate Studies for participating in research. In order to enroll in UGS 310 or UGS 320, you must find a faculty member who is willing to supervise you (either as an assistant on an existing project or as the author of an individual project). You and your faculty supervisor will complete and sign a research contract, which will be turned in to the undergraduate research coordinator in the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR). Drafting the contract will allow you to develop ideas about what you hope to accomplish and what your faculty supervisor expects of you over the course of the semester.

Contracts for UGS 310 and 320 are due by the fourth class day during the fall and spring semesters, and the Monday before classes begin in the summer.

Credit options in UGS

UGS 310 is appropriate for lower-division students pursuing research assistantship experiences.
UGS 320K is appropriate for upper-division students pursuing research assistantship experiences.
UGS 320L (with II flag) satisfies the Independent Inquiry flag requirement, and is appropriate for students pursuing independent research experiences under the supervision of a faculty mentor.

Note: Credit may not be earned for more than one semester on the same project. The course may be repeated for credit with consent of the Office of Undergraduate Reasearch Coordinator for research on a different project. If you have ALREADY received course credit for participation in the proposed research project, you'll need to enter the course number for the previous course in the research contract you plan to submit.

Please visit Course Credit for Undergraduate Research for more information and/or to submit a research contract. Feel free to contact the Office of Undergraduate Research with additional questions.
