Languages for UT Students

Foreign Language Requirements

The College of Liberal Arts requires that students achieve intermediate proficiency in a foreign language as part of their degree requirements. The number of semesters and total number of credits required to complete this vary by language.

UTeach – Liberal Arts

The UTeach-Liberal Arts undergraduate program is designed for liberal arts students who wish to become certified for secondary education in a liberal arts field. Students can obtain certification in a variety of foreign languages. The program consists of at least four long-semesters of coursework and field placements in local schools.

Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowship

Each year the Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship program, funded through US Department of Education Title VI grants provided to College of Liberal Arts area studies centers, provides almost $1 million in funding to UT undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines to study foreign languages and cultures at UT and elsewhere in the US and abroad.

Language Instruction for Everyone

Texas Language Gateway - University Extension

Faculty in the University's College of Liberal Arts teach more than three dozen global languages. Through the Texas Language Gateway (TLG) partnership with University Extension, many of those languages are now available to learners everywhere. Earn transferable academic credit. Courses are open-enrollment, no UT admission required.

Summer Language Institutes

The Department of Middle Eastern Studies offers intensive language instruction to students through the Arabic Summer Institute and the Hebrew Summer Institute. The Center for Middle Eastern Studies offers the Pashto Online Summer Institute. Online summer programs in the South Asian languages Kannada, Malayalam, and Telugu are offered by the South Asia Institute.

Early Indo-European Online (EIEOL)

The EIEOL collection of language lesson series is designed to help users advance rapidly to a point where they can read original texts in early languages with the occasional assistance of linguistic commentary or accompanying translations.

Language Resources for Teachers

The Center for Open Educational Resources and Language Learning (COERLL)

We create Open Educational Resources (OER) for language teaching and learning at the University of Texas at Austin and share them with the world.

Texas Language Center

The Texas Language Center supports, enhances, and promotes the teaching of languages and cultures at the University of Texas at Austin. The Center offers services that facilitate language teaching at all levels through faculty seminars/webinars, graduate portfolio courses, and coordination with advising staff to assist students in selecting appropriate courses.

Linguistics Research Center (LRC)

Founded in 1961, the Linguistics Research Center (LRC) provides linguistic resources for specialists and non-specialists alike. Over the last several years the LRC has worked to create a robust set of online materials dedicated to the most archaic members of the Indo-European language family, of which English is a member, and the cultures of which they formed a part. We provide these materials freely for public use.

Hemispheres: The International Outreach Consortium

Hemispheres, the international outreach consortium at the University of Texas at Austin, offers a broad educational program to increase knowledge and understanding of Western Europe; Latin America; the Middle East; Russia, East Europe, and Eurasia; and South Asia. Using the resources of one of the nation’s largest research institutions, we work with educators to address critical needs and to supplement existing knowledge of the world around us.
